Unions
threaten to
shut down
subway again

Unions representing subway
workers threatened on Friday
to shut down the Metro
indefinitely next week after a
second day of talks broke
down between union officials
and the Madrid regional
government.
The meeting with workers’
representatives and Ignacio
González Velayos, the government’s
Metro chief, lasted
three hours with no agreement
reached. Workers are
demanding that regional premier
Esperanza Aguirre cancels
her decision to cut their
salaries by five percent along
with other regional government
workers. However, the
subway employees maintain
that they are not government
laborers.
Madrid officials say they
have 250 buses ready to transport
people on Metro routes.
